I find the qualities of a landscape are more subtle and often harder to discern and pin down than a cityscape; the affects of weather, the time of day, and year, are more apparent. As with all painting it is necessary to let go and see what you discover in the process. A minor change in tone or hue can be all that’s needed to make a painting work. As with all my painting I start by working from life, whether it’s on top of a snowdrift or a field in the midsummer sun, and then develop the work in the studio.

It is the elusive quality of the atmosphere of a particular place and day that is of most interest to me in a landscape painting.
