Paintings from life done on the streets of Newcastle and Cardiff.
I find cityscapes fascinating because of their combination of organic and geometric shapes, the evidence of human endeavour that has created them, their energy, the interplay of natural and manmade light, the mixed cultural histories that have shaped them and the way they reveal the human spirit.
I usually work directly from life to begin with, setting up my easel on a street corner or from a high balcony or window to get a panorama view. Painting in the streets always attracts a lot of attention and many interesting conversations can ensue; I was once given two pence by a tramp to get a cup of coffee! I then continue the painting in the studio where a more reflective approach can develop.
